Prenatal Care

One of the most important parts of midwifery care is plenty of time.

Each hour long prenatal visit will include listening to the baby’s heartbeat, monitoring growth, ensuring your vitals are normal, and bloodwork on the standard schedule. Prenatal visits are the foundation of building our relationship and trust as midwife and client. Older siblings are welcome and I encourage partners to participate and ask questions.

Your prenatal care include:

  • 90 minute initial prenatal visit

  • Prenatal schedule (hour long visits):

    • Once a month, in office, until 28 weeks

    • Every two weeks until 36 weeks

    • A home visit at 36 weeks

    • Weekly, in office, until you go into labor

  • Lab work and ultrasound referrals as needed

  • Between visits I am on-call and available by phone 24/7 for urgent concerns. I am also reachable by text and email for any non-urgent questions.

Home Birth

We’ll be in close contact when labor begins and I’ll join you when labor seems active or you’re needing guidance and support. Throughout labor I’ll monitor your vitals, listen to the baby’s heartbeat, and monitor for steady progress. There is no set time limit for how long we can be at home together as long as everyone is healthy and energized.

I’ll bring a variety of equipment to your birth including oxygen, resuscitation equipment, medications for controlling postpartum bleeding, lidocaine and suture equipment, IV fluids, and antibiotics if they are needed in labor.

Many people choose to labor or birth in a waterbirth tub, hire a doula or have an additional trusted loved one present for the birth. This is your birth and we work together to create an environment that best suits your needs.

Once the baby is born I’ll be with you for 2 hours minimum or as long as we need to make sure the baby is transitioning well, the placenta is delivered safely, bleeding is under control, you’ve had a meal and a shower, and of course get the baby’s newborn exam and weight. After it’s clear that everyone is healthy and well, we’ll tuck you in and be back for a visit the next day.

Postpartum Care

Comprehensive, home-based postpartum care is one of the best parts of having a home birth with midwives. At each hour long postpartum checkup we assess you and your baby’s well being, while providing education and support for nursing, healing, and caring for your baby. In addition to your home visits, we continue to be on-call for your family in the postpartum to advise you on any questions or concerns for you and your baby.

Postpartum visits include:

  • Hour long postpartum visits in your home at 1 day, 3-4 days, and 7-14 days

  • Postpartum checkups in office 4 weeks and 6 weeks

  • Taking parent and baby vitals, including weighing your baby

  • Lactation and infant feeding support

  • Performing congenital heart defect and metabolic screening for your baby

  • Pap and pelvic floor assessment at 6 weeks postpartum
